From February 15 , Google will be blocking ad views on websites that violate the Ads Standards, which have been created by the Coalition for Better Ads. For more information on the Standards requirements, check https://www.betterads.org/standards/.

According to the procedure, the publisher receives a report on ad views on their website, Ad Experience Report. If the report has information on violations, the publisher should correct the violations and validate their website again within 30 days. Otherwise, all advertisements on the publisher’s website will be blocked in the Google Chrome browser.
At the moment, the Coalition for Better Ads Standards are applicable to Europe and North America.

The Standards requirements interpreted by Google can be found following the links below:
for desktop ad types: https://support.google.com/webtools/answer/7129127?hl=en
for mobile ad types: https://support.google.com/webtools/answer/7073774

Considering the restricted ad experiences mentioned in the Standards, we made up a list of Admixer ad formats that may partially or completely violate the requirements.

Desktop

  • Fullscreen, Popup, Click to Fullscreen (auto expandable) are forbidden by the Standards as off-page Pop-up Ads.
  • Auto expandable floating ads (Floor Ad, Page corner) are forbidden. They can be defined as off-page pop-up ads or ads that take up more than 30% of screen real estate.
The expandable Flood Ad whose expanded height is less than 30% of screen height, may be allowed.
  • Floating ads (Floor Ad, Page corner, Floating, Catfish) that take up more than 30% of screen height are forbidden (Large Sticky Ads).
Floating (‘sticky’) ads are allowed only if they are placed right to a screen’s edge (usually top or bottom) and take up less than 30% of the screen. Therefore, Floor ad and Floating formats placed at the bottom of the screen should not exceed 230px height according to the statistically minimum screen resolution of 768px. For HTML5 creatives relative units should be used and a banner’s height set as a percentage. Maximum allowed height of a creative for these ad formats is 30% of screen height.
  • Auto-playing Video Ads with Sound not initiated by the user are forbidden in any ad type.
Preroll, Midroll, and the sound in a banner initiated by the user are allowed.

Mobile

  • Mobile Fullscreen, Mobile Click-To-FullScreen (auto expandable) are forbidden by the Standards as off-page Pop-up Ads and Prestitial Ads.
  • Mobile Floating, Mobile Click-To-FullScreen that take up more than 30% of screen height are forbidden (Large Sticky Ads).
Floating (‘sticky’) ads are allowed only if they are placed right to a screen’s edge (usually top or bottom) and take up less than 30% of the screen. Maximum allowed height of a creative for these ad formats is 30% of screen height. Admixer UI templates for uploading images – Mobile Click to Fullscreen, Mobile Floating – are suitable for allowed banner’s height.
  • Auto-playing Video Ads with Sound not initiated by the user are forbidden in any ad type.
Preroll, Midroll, and the sound in a banner initiated by the user are allowed.
  • Mobile Standard, Mobile Flexible, Mobile Extend, Mobile Parallax, Mobile Parallax Fullscreen. These formats may be restricted due to the total height of all advertisements on a page; it should not exceed 30% of the height of totally expanded page content (excluding the header, the footer, and other sections that do not concern the content) (Ad Density Higher Than 30%). The restriction should be followed by the publisher when placing ad creative on a page.
  • Flashing Animated Ads are forbidden. Animation with fast changing background, colour, which creates the flashing effect is forbidden. The restriction applies to all mobile creatives with animation.

If you still need to place ads that may be restricted, you should exclude the Chrome browser in targeting settings.

We keep an eye on updates and get important details from the Google support.
